There seems to be a public view that you can only get a berth in Yarmouth now if you book. THIS IS NOT THE CASE.
There are some bookable berths in Yarmouth but most of the berths are allocated on a first come first served basis as they always have been.

If anyone knows where the misinformation comes from it would be helpful to know so we can put it right.

Yarmouth IOW still here to welcome you.

People probably like to book, i got turned away at 2pm as the harbour was full recently, we're going to try again tomorrow arriving even earlier.

Daniel.

Oh well, i'll have to sit and ponder the memories of the one time in 5 years on the solent i actually got in there..

The problem with Yarmouth is not Yarmouth. It's usually full up of boats from the hamble.

I used to keep my boat in the Hamble and alwys got into Yarmouth whenever i wanted to without it being full. But now i'm in Gosport i have never ever made it into yarmouth as all the Hamble boats have got their first.

Shame really as it's a nice place...but a trick i did learn...if you arrive after 7pm the Harbour Master has gone home and even though the full sign is shown you can still find plenty of space inside.

Chris , thanks for that. I think most of the concerns were raised following the Easter bank holliday, when it appeared that the rafting of boats, on the "green" pontoon, was to be restricted to no more than two deep. Spring bank holliday saw the rafts back to three and four deep, which made for much more unbookable space.

One thing about Yarmouth that hasn't changed is the cheeriness and helpfulness of the harbour staff. Long may it continue.

I'll second that, in fact the staff ALWAYS try and find you space. Last year we arrived on a busy Sat at 1800, two boats, we were leaving with the ebb the following morning for Alderney. The FULL sign had been up since 1600, we were both found a space

Chris

Do you still generally collect payment from boats as they leave? In the past I have offered to pay at the office and been told to pay the guy in the dory on the way out.

We left at 05:00 on Tuesday and there was nobody to pay. But I owned up and payed on the way back yesterday. Yes I did, Honest.

If you leave before 09:00 you can get away without paying but we used to chuck a couple of quid in the cockpit of the HMs boat on the way out but that was in the 70/80s. usually after mooring alongside him. Must admit the then HM was a mate of our Skipper.

We collect payments on arrival or you can pay at the harbour office (especially if you want to pay by credit card). However if its really frantic out on the water the Berthing Master may ask you to pay before you leave rather than take your money immediately.

welcome Chris

I think most here are aware of the position as you set it out.

As a small boat (sub 8m) usually with a wife and child onboard if intending to stay overnight it is nice to be able to book - the alternative I am usually presented with onboard is to run home if we can't get in!

In 5 years this has only happened once - and even then it was because we were in company

Keep up the good work

Duncan
