Bruce,

You cannot book Yarmouth, my only advice is turn up early and they will get you in, depending when you are planing to go, remember its the end of Cowes week so everywhere will be busy

too true, arrive by midday to be sure of a place this time of year. They may reply to phone, almost certainly not email.

Good idea is to tell the guy in the dory that you are a novice, and they'll be helpful. I managed to get away with telling them I'm a novice for about 5 years...

The harbourmasters in Yarmouth are excellent. Just roll up at the entrance and wait until one of them meets you in his dory and directs you to berth. Dont bother calling on VHF 'coz they probably wont answer and they've probably never heard of e-mail. 24' should'nt be a problem but try to be in before mid afternoon or earlier. Be aware that the tide can run pretty fiercely through the harbour at times so take account of that as well as the wind when mooring up. You will also need a dinghy to reach the shore or use the water taxi (Ch15 I think)

You can book onto Harold Hayles pontoon which is conected to land and also has electricity (01983) 760373. More expensive than the harbour though.
As for being able to book into Yarmouth Harbour, we booked a few weeks back for a £5 non refundable deposit.

Bruce. Yarmouth is great for your first big trip in the Solent. It was the first place i ever went on my own.

As said you wll be met at the entrance by Bryn the harbourmaster. He will tell you where to berth, he will also help you moor up if you require assistance.

Watch the movements of the white link ferry on entry. If you are arriving on a spring tide, be careful the tide does not take you sideways. Yarmouth can be very busy in the summer and often has a full sign up for bigger boats. smaller boats they will always find a slot for.

Thanks chaps
A bit nervous , first real trip ,Yarmouth looks just the job if the HM is that much help , my dread is turning towards excitment .I just keep visualizing all the things that could go wrong and going through corrections in my fuddled brain, hearing the instructors voice calmly and quietly telling me" What a balls up you made of that" still practice makes perfect and we all have got to go on that first trip
Regards
Bruce
