Yarmouth food for a group of 40?

Hi all

Need to organise food for around 40 of us who'll be sailing into Yarmouth on a Saturday in June.

I normally prefer the Kings Head right by the ferry (or a BBQ on the beach!), but think it's a little small for us all.

So my choices seem to be The Bugle or The Wheatsheaf - recommendations of the two? Is there a beer garden at The Bugle? Or other options I've overlooked?

Thanks

How recently was that? TripAdvisor suggests it would be OK.

We'll want an informal, inexpensive meal with drinks and lots of chatting between ships' crews. I thought the Bugle looked the better of the two for that.

My experience is from a while back. Experience of those I've had on board is very recent.
I once booked for a group of 18 there. Very disappointed and felt I had let the whole group down.
Food at Wheatsheaf is much better. Good value. Not much atmosphere but certainly ok.

I booked the Wheatsheaf last summer for a group of 20 on a Friday evening and they coped very well. It was a big room as I remember so I expect they could manage your larger group. As others have said not much character or atmosphere but a functional modern pub. A big group make their own atmosphere anyway IMHO. Perfectly acceptable food and beer but nothing to write home about.

Agreed that the Bugle is bad for food as of this month and last Xmas.

I had a representative of a successful restaurant chain come here to buy a drum kit from me for his son and we went for dinner at the Bugle in Yarmouth. His wife ordered a prawn salad and the prawns were encased in a brick of ice to which the chef said when I complained "what do you expect, they're kept on ice". She stormed off in a huff when I retorted "exactly, ON and not IN".

What about Foresters up the side of Harwoods Chandlers? They have won the Trip advisor certificate of excellent for the last three years and having held a party there myself can see why. Maybe arrange a per head fee on a slimmed menu and have a venue to yourselves? http://www.forrestersbistro.co.uk/

Of course this is if you haven't already visited!

Just as an update - I booked for mid-June and went for the Bugle in the end, as wanted the atmosphere of the pub. It worked out great. They reserved the whole brasserie area for us, did us a special menu with five meat options and three veggie options, all at under a tenner each. Some positive comments from people about their food. After our meal we retired to their 'coffee lounge' which we had all to ourselves - although didn't quite fit all 40 of us in it!
