Because you get a number of false alarms. It needs to be a simple process to cancel, but not so simple that you do it by mistake. Hitting one for silence and two for cancel is fraught with potential mistakes - hitting the wrong one in a panic moment. One short to silence, one long to cancel is ideal, it's also quite intuitive. One other great thing about Angus' unit is it's dead simple to use. I'd be wary of adding extra features and buttons. It's very effective at one simple job - you go out of range, a buzzer goes off and the position is marked on the plotter.
