Hi All,
I see many posts here commenting on the outrageous cost of Yanmar parts. Good engines but by god they screw you severely for parts. I don't mind paying where I see intrinsic value in the good or service I'm buying but with Yanmar I see obscene price-gouging
I have rebuilt a YSB 12 Yanmar using parts from a Yanmar TS105 industrial engine. Many parts are common to both engines and even have the same part numbers. There are also many aftermarket sources because these industrial engines are still used extensively in Asia. The difference in price is staggering. In some cases I paid less than a tenth of the price of the so-called marine part. The engine runs beautifully (to the extent that you can expect smooth running from a 40 yr old single).
I'm about to tackle a 2GM20 and I wonder if anyone has sourced alternative parts for this engine? I see that Yanmar TS 60 has same bore size so maybe this is an option? I'm interested in typical rebuild bits like pistons, liners, main and big end bearings. Also interested in a lift pump. The cost of a genuine part here in Oz is almost $300.....ridiculous. Doesn't seem like a new diaphragm can be purchased separately. Why??? The pump is otherwise in good condition. Yet another example of greedy Yanmar screwing its customers.
Look forward to your thoughts.
Cheers

I'm trying (unsuccessfully) to recall the descriptor of the base engine - always useful to cross reference to other applications. It's too long ago for me to remember enough detail, but at one time a friend acquired an engine from a written off refrigerated trailer. It was a two cylinder Yanmar and although the ancillaries were different, it was obviously the same engine as the original 2GM. We contacted the local ThermoKing dealer who were happy to sell us spares at about a quarter of the price of marine outlets! They even gave us their parts catalogue to help the process and at one time phoned to advise they had a good spare engine available!

Rob.

Thanks Rob. This is a useful lead. I have also found that Yanmar has supplied various engines to John Deere for use in their smaller tractors. So far I haven't found an engine that has the same 75mm bore as the GM series.

I have a Yanmar 2GM20F engine with a Kansaki transmission and the forward gear is slipping. Does anyone know where I can find parts without going to Japan. I'm hearing that there are discontinued and there are no replacement parts here in North America. I live in Penticton, BC in western Canada. Thank you for any help, leads, or contacts.
Cheers
Bruce

Hi Bruce,
I found a company in Japan which will source parts for anything Japanese. It is Motorheads Japan (www.part-sale.jp/). I ordered some Yanmar 2GM engine parts from them. The parts are all genuine OEM Yanmar and the price was significantly cheaper than sourcing the same items here in Australia. Obviously took a little bit longer than going to local stealer but well worth the saving. You will need to provide the part number for the item and they will quote you the cost. I was very happy with the service.
