looking at a boat, has this engine, unused for 18 months..previous info from local engineers stated they were asked to look at it,for blue smoke&poor running, but was never pursued..obviously many possibilities, and a full tank through injector cleanout needed, but is this an injection/compression problem?can you get stuck rings etc, externally well cared for..funny how the quoted cost of strip&rebuild professionally matches almost exactly the cost of a new engine, that they are flogging!!anyone doing reconditioned ones?many thanks

Blue smoke indicates burning oil. Do you not fancy having a go at it yourself?
You can learn a lot about your own engine by DIY, and save money as well.

They aren't difficult to work on. I gave mine a top end overhaul when it was about 16 years old, only because I thought I should, not for any particular problem. Your local Lucas shop will check the injector, alternator and starter motor for you.

Blue smoke is burning engine oil, and coupled with poor running suggests the comprssion is down. The bores may be glazed, or the rings may be worn or damaged, or it may just be worn out. Until the head and piston has been removed to find out what is going on its no good trying to guess whats wrong.

One possible pointer is that the problem has happened before. This COULD indicate bore glazing caused by allowing the engine to idle for long periods - perhaps for charging the batteries while moored up.

Bore glazing although it involves an engine strip is not difficult to deal with, and does not warrant engine replacement unless there is excessive wear or damage elsewhere.

A one off rebuild is relatively expensive, as there is the time cost of stripping and cleaning the old unit, and the replacement parts bought individually can cost considerably more than those supplied bulk for a factory production run.

Generally speaking there has to be a good reason for stripping, reboring and rebuilding an engine, rather than simply replacing it with a new unit. Other considerations apart a new unit will also have new ancillaries - starters, pumps, alternator and wiring loom; replacing all these during a rebuild job will substantially increase the cost!
