I would think condition and proper maintenance is more important than hours or engine type.
Do sailboats often have that sort of hours? I would have imagined the engine wouldn't get used a lot and suffer from it.

Never heard of a Yanmar 16CV engine but 2000 hours is nothing if regularly both used and serviced. My 2005 Yanmar 3YM30 is at 5,600 hours and yesterday started instantly from cold at tickover revs without bothering with preheat. Does not smoke. Runs just as well as when it was new, burns very little oil. Dealer serviced once a year, I do an oil and filter change myself at least once mid-season. According to the Yanmar service schedule that asks for a 100 hour service interval that is not enough oilchanges, but so far seems OK.

Sounds like a 2GM which comes in essentially 2 versions, raw water cooled and fresh (2GMF). Simple and rather crude by today's standards and as said 2000 hours is nothing for the basic engine. Raw water cooled engines need flushing through from time to time because of salt build up in the waterways. Otherwise just regular oil changes are all that is required.

If the engine looks reasonably clean, an indication that it has been serviced regularly, no obvious oil or coolant leaks then 2,000 hours is nothing to be concerned about and providing you do the basic maintenance it will out live your sailing career.

Probably more worthwhile to ask for evidence of maintenance on the peripherals such as stern gland repack or seal replacement, cutless bearing replacement, heat exchanger cleaning, impellor changes, gearbox oil and engine mounts. Over 15-20 years this will tell you how well the engine has been monitored and maintained.
