Hi,

I have had a few problems with our Yanmar 1GM10. Firstly the water pump was leaking because the seals had gone, which meant water dripped on the oil pipes which run underneath and are made of steel. Fixed the water pump with new seals and treated the oil pipes for corrosion.

A little while later the long oil pipe fractured on the bend and empties all the oil in the bilge. No problem, got the new pipes (at £92.57). Went to fit them and the bracket which holds the long one on is bolted onto the timing case cover. Anyway a light turn on this bolt and the head snaps off. This was probably caused by corrosion. This meant the timing gear cover had to come off with the fuel pump, water pump, pulley etc to be able to reach the broken bolt. Finally got everything unbolted (no other siezed bolts or nuts) and tried to remove the cover. I then found that the cover has cracked around the broken stud, possible due to the bolt expanding through corrosion or while I was trying to get the cover off.

As the gasket for this cover was already £36 + VAT does anybody know where I could get a second hand cover or a new one at a good price.

This shows how a 5 minute job turns into a very expensive 10 hour job.

Thanks

Andy

while you're at it, get a complete engine for spares, looks like you're going to need it.

sorry, not really a good time for a joke. i know only too well the cost of yanmar spares. trouble is, the wretched things don't wear out and there's almost no scrap ones about. you might try asking around the local yards, otherwise you'll have to bite the bullet

You could try Peter at Marine Power at Bursledon. 01703 403918 - sorted me out with a second-hand block for a 2GM20.

I think someone had a spares-or-repair 1GM10 on the 'for sale' forum a short while ago.

Hi,

Thanks for your replies.

The thought of buying a spare engine did cross my mind when I saw a brand new 1GM10 at Marine Power in their reception.

Anyway the cover was £113.00 in the end which issn't too bad considering how complex it is and the general cost of Yanmar spares.

The other option at the time it broke was to give it a Viking burial at sea, fortunately we didn't have any matches otherwise there would be an amusing story in next months PBO.

Befor you refit everything you might consider fitting A4 stainless bolts, it really cuts down on the heartache especially round the water pumps.....keith

Hi,

Thanks, I did swap all the bolts on the water pump with stainless versions when I fixed it. I also made sure they did not get painted.

Hi,

I saw the one on E-Bay, did you notice that the oil pipes have been replaced by flexible braided pipes instead. I bet these were cheaper than the Yanmar part and probably better.

Had a GM10 in my last boat with a similar problem ie leaking steel oil pipes. I got a couple of braided pipes off the fuel injection system on an audi at a scrappy - cost was around £3...

having just been quoted 309 + vat for a power steering fluid oil cooler that 'failed' on an engine (4LHA-STZP) barely 3 years old I am fast coming to the same conclusions re spares etc!
Someone somewhere is going to start buying new units to strip for 'cut price spares'..../forums/images/icons/smile.gif

part of the problem is as a make gainspopularity they start to hike the prices,it's why people moved from volvo to yanmar in the first place now its yanmar starting to get expensive on the spares, i give it about another five years and you will see a price hike in the cost of Beta/Kubota spares as they start to corner the market, unfortunately we are on the sharp edge and its forums like this that help you find out how to cut costs, sources of affordable spares etc that makes it possible for some of us to keep sailing...........keith

Yanmar Spares

have always been expensive in the UK.

Fortunately many of their parts are shared with other automotive companies so you can invariably buy anything but the actual engine parts for 40-60% of the Yanmar prices.

Given continuous supply of clean oil (diesel and lubrication) they're extremely reliable (which is more than one can say for Volvo). Probably the only weakness on the multi-cylinder ones is the probability of head blows.
This is because they've enlarged the bores to increase power output, leaving too little land between the water jacket holes and bores.

Re: Yanmar Spares

yanmar spares are not exactly cheap this side of the pond, tis why most american boats 35ft and over run Perkins4108s.........spares are available everywhere and the competition between vendors keeps the prices lean, i had MD7s in my cat and have now fitted 2GMs, Volvo's worldwide network sounds good but its Bullsh*t, doesn't exist and the spares prices were astronomical...........keith

Irony..

..when a posting starts with unreliability / poor parts availability / expense of Yanmar parts ends up criticising Volvo Penta engines.

Anyway, given maintenance as per the manufacturers recommendations (actually, somewhat less truth be known), my Volvo has been perfectly reliable. I understand I can still get parts that quite frankly I ought never be able to for a 16 year old engine, at prices that broadly reflect the price of maintaining that availability.

Amazing.

Commiserations to all who chose a Yanmar. Perhaps they are now starting to realise the cost of maintaining back up on some of the older models, which no doubt will be shared accross the piece.

Re: interpretation

"..when a posting starts with unreliability / poor parts availability / expense of Yanmar parts "

I think it was pretty focused on the last rather than the other two points? The origional posted didn't seem to be suggesting that either this was a newish or well maintained unit or that he couldn't get the spares easily over the counter....simply that they were expensive.
In my case the failed part is actually manufactured for Mercruiser and bolted to a Yanmar engine....easy to get just damm pricy!

Do however continue to enjoy your Volvo.
