Yanmar yse8 air filter

I have a Yanmar YSEM 8hp, Would anyone know how to clean the metal air filter, new ones are very very expensive , even if you can find one. (1980+ engine). I have been told that you can "burn" them??????. doesnt sound very practical to me though, surely would damage the wire filter.

for the definative answer I suggest you contact John Skewer at Cellar Marine .. he specialises in these older engines 01326 280214 .. please let me know when you have the answer
PS I bought a service manual from him ... it is vital when you ask an engineer to service the engine for you...
