My old Yannie's got a poorly starter - the man says it's the commutator that's kaput.

Its a 3GM "F" model. Any tips on where to get a sensibly priced replacement?

Any ideas on a sensible price?

Motor's abroad - is there a case for service exchange or repair?

It is a pity the motor is abroad because I would advocate pull it apart and have a go yourself. The commutator is on the end of the armature and consists of a cylinder shaped area of coppper divided in the circumference by insulators to make about 20 segments of copper each connected to wires in the winding. 2 brushes of carbon bare on these segments, different segments as it rotates. The soft copper and brushes can wear with use and can also simply get dirty providing a poor electrical connection. If you can remove the starter very often you can remove the brushes to see the commutator and judge its wear. Instead of being level the area will have a hollow. A few millimeters of hollow may be OK as the brushes wear to accommodate but any more requires that it be turned down level on a lathe or replaced. If it is turned down then you have to carefully scrape out the area between the segments to ensure there is no electrical connection between each segment. Often though a clean with emery paper will get it all working again.
The brushes are held in by springs and inevitably as they wear they lose spring pressure on the commutator giving poor connection. New brushes may solve the problem.
So if you are up for it you could purchase new brushes and give it a go yourself. ( with the chance of failure). I have assumed it is a stater and not a starter/generator which is similar but with additional brushes and commutator (I think) Anyway good luck Olewill

From memory the 1GM, 2GM and 3GM use the same 2.5kW starter motor.

It would certainly be worth having the old one off and machining the commutator and replacing the brushes.

You'll find, especially in less economically overdeveloped countries than the UK, plenty of people who'll do that for you.
In the UK they'll demand c£350 for a new motor.

Had a similar problem on my 2GM20 last year, found out about refurbishing, but in the end just to decided to get a new one. Cost from what I remember was about £180. Very easy to fit and you know it's going to work. Like having a new engine. I got mine through Tonto Marine in Galmpton, near Brixham. I can get you numbers, or find them on line.
