A friend has had a problem with his Yanmar starter motor. I think the engine is a 3GM. He could replace various bearings and brush holders using a Yanmar re-furb kit costing £100 or replace the entire thing for £410. However, he has discovered that the starter motor is identical to that used in some construction equipment and available for £85. The only difference is that the marine version is painted blue whereas the construction version is unpainted.
He hasn't fitted it yet so I'll keep you posted.

Check that the marine version doesn't have a separate -Ve negative return, the construction engine will almost certainly return -ve via the casing.

Even if the marine is separate -Ve I would still use the cheaper, connect the - Ve lead to the engine case with a simple isolator switch in line. That will minimise any galvanic problems.

I replaced my Yanmar 1 GM 10 starter motor with an 'identical' one from a local alternator/starter motor supplier. Works fine and cost me £95 instead of Yanmar's £200++

Take the original with you for a match-up.

Also, for £20 the guy cleaned and serviced the original one, which I have as a back-up if required.
