My Yanmar 1GM10 has developed a squeak. I thought first it was the alternator.
But the squeak seems to come from the very engine itself, usually idling on cold start, but sometimes idling after running for a while.

The usual cause of a squeak is the alternator belt slipping under the load from a partly discharged battery.

Yes usually a belt is the reason, a couple of drips of water onto one of the pulleys when it's running will tell you if it's the belt. The squeak will change note or disappear
