Yanmar SD40 Saildrive Problem

Hi, my saildrive made a horrible sound and the engine stopped. Took a photo. Attached. The saildrive upper gear housing is damaged with a drive rod coming through the top plate that has the dipstick.

Has anyone seen this before? Any ideas on the problem?
