Yanmar SD20 Raw Water Stop Cock

I spent Saturday doing jobs on Dreamer whilst she was out of the water.
In December when flushing the raw water system with anti freeze I had noted that the inlet side of the fresh water strainer filter was draining even though the stop cock on my Yanmar SD20 was wound in to its full extent. On saturday I removed the stop cock and found it was broken internally and was not working - disappointing on a 2006 boat
I am about to order a new stainless Ball valve and fittings to replace the original Yanmar part. I will post the results on this thread.
For those with a SD20 it is probably worth a check by pouring water down the inlet pipe (make SURE the end is above sea level or you are on the hard because if the inlet valve is working you dont want a hose leak) and seeing if the level goes down when you fill up with the valve is closed - if it does it probably will not stop a leak if you get a raw water hose burst !
Any similar experience out there?
Cheers
Martin

When you say "stop cock", do you mean a gate valve like you might find in a house?

If so, it's not surprising that it failed (they do), but I am a bit surprised that it was fitted to a new boat in 2006 (because they're known to fail).

I have the same sail drive. Do you mean the small screw handle low down on the stbd side of the leg, just above the hull? And by inlet pipe, are you referring to the water level in the strainer?
Hi Ken
Yes the small screw handle as you describe and I am referring to the water level in the strainer which is connected directly to the valve in question.
