Cheap Yanmars
Heard an interesting story today, can't vouch for the authenticity of it but it sounds plausible, perhaps "diesel" could confirm.

It seems that Sealine, builders of "luxury" motoryachts have been having problems with their Yanmar installations. So much so that they are removing them and replacing them with Volvo's.

The Yanmar packages are being returned to Barrus due to them "not being fit for the purpose intended". It seems that they keep breaking drives, and they don't attain the expected speed

Now I don't know how true this is, but as usual I spoke to a guy who knows someone who knows the guy who's doing the swap's!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyhow, these packages are now starting to turn up on the s/h market, at a very low price.

Sounds dodgy, looking thru current (04) Sealine pricelist shows no Yanmar options at all - 98% Volvo, with one or two Cummins or Caterpillars at the upper end.

I would think that if they are removing them from their boats, they would also remove them from their pricelist!

It is true, but I think happened a while ago, I knew of this 18 odd months ago. I know a guy whose got one in his rib.

That would make more sense, the 03 pricelist shows the Sealine C39 offered with some alternative drive options that got quietly ditched (Arneson Drives, Tunnel Drives), and the Yanmar 6LY2(M)-STE(440) was listed alongside the usual Volvo.

A RIB fitted with a one of those and an Arneson Drive would be something to behold, especially as it reverses among swimmers...

Agree, it is old news. I accompanied someone to see a Sealine S41 last year which had new volvos because the Yanmars were ripped out. Nothing wrong with the lumps, but the drives couldn't take the 300hp and mashed up their insides! Sealine had to take Yanmar to court to resolve the dispute.
