I called Keypart who tell me 3 oversize pistons for my 3TNE68 yanmar are £100 each + vat!
then the head gasket is £50ish + VAT then some extra for the other gaskets, all plus delivery, heading on for £500
What a rip off!

Can anyone make any suggestions on a cheaper alternative/supplier, that's a silly price for what is a pretty standard/simple item. I have the yanmar part no's

You may find distributors are loathe to sell outside their area/country if they are an accredited dealer but certainly worth trying , it does not help you but there is a benefit to buying an engine that is marinized from an industrial unit like Beta or small Volvo as dealers of spares for the basic unit are plentiful and competition is always good news. Years ago I had to rebuild an old petrol twin Britsprite ( UK design circa 1950) and I sourced the pistons from a car engine rebuilders apparently they were as used on an old Triumph model or was it a Standard (vintage ) car. I doubt if Yanmar used any British car parts but they may have used an existing Japanese car engine for some parts , I was surprised when I took my Perkins Perama starter motor to a local car spares shop and came away with a Mitsubishi Colt circa 1994 identical part £50.

I fully understand your frustration, for the 4 cyl Yanmars the prices are even more !!

Are you 100% sure that the gaskets are actually required ? I have just stripped down the front end of a 4JH3-TE, looking at the parts lists gasket were shown for the sump and gear housing to the block. When I removed the gear housing, no gaskets, annoying as I'd already bought the housing gasket at £36+ for a thin paper part !! I then found out that Yanmar are using a 'liquid gasket' brand Three Bond. The head gasket for the 4 cyl was quoted at £150 :-( luckily I did not need to remove the head.

For slightly cheaper prices try the Yanmar European distributor in Rotterdam, website here :

You can view in English, prices in Euro's + 20% tax and shipping.

Good luck.

I believe that Yanmar engines are marinised Kubota - as are Nanni.
Kubota parts are available from non-boaty sources and are a bit cheaper
than from boaty sources, but not a lot. I buy parts for my Nanni from Bryco at Daventry but do have problems
identifying the correct Kubota part numbers.

I try and order from the States.
In fairness I don't think the issue is with Keyparts or Marine Power but the UK distributor Barrus.

And in fairness to Barrus, it's Yanmar themselves who impose differential prices, plus restrictions on who can sell to where. I'm really quite surprised that they can get away with it, but there you go. I normally get Yanmar parts from the US, via relatives there. It knocks 30% - 50% off most prices.

No, they are not. Yanmar make their own small engines.

In my view your challenge is to identify part by part sensible alternatives and my advice is that you treat it just like that, and IF you win then TELL EVERONE else !

Likelihood is you will find this rip off piston is used in a dump truck somewhere for $8 - 10

I had a similar problem with a so called Mastervolt generator last Winter. Turned out it was actually a Paguro and also the identical unit is masqueraded as a Westerbeke. The key clue was that Westerbeke published a parts list of the Engine assemblies Original Manufacturer part numbers, which turned out to be by Farymann.

So a simple exhaust valve quoted at something like £120 was in fact a common or garden part for a road hammer using the identical engine, and I eventually bought it for about £12. Mitcham Diesels hooray !

The thing is Mastervolt have now shot their bolt as far as I am concerned. They also wanted £450 for a cracked start panel decal that I bought for £21 with a Westerbeke label, yes that's right £450 for an item bought fairly for £21. Never ever will I buy anything 'Mastervolt'.

If you need some help PM me your engine details and parts required as I like a challenge.

Where on earth do people dig this sort of misinformation up?

Most Yanmar engines are marinised in house in Japan. However some of the range is marinised at Yanmar's U.S. plant using U.S. sourced components.

The Yanmar BY BMW based range was developed and marinised by Magna Steyr in Austria with full marine up-fit being in U.S.

However what is not in dispute is Yanmar's sky high parts pricing policy, makes Volvo Penta seem a steal. Having attempted to warn people about purchasing boats fitted with the pesky BY motor I regularly get emails from owners who are walking wounded by their experience. For example the raw water pump appears to be sourced from Johnson pump, however the supply contract forbids Johnson to sell pumps or components into the aftermarket. The result, raw water pump is £1,200 plus VAT, no replaceable wear plate and until recently lip seal could not be purchased as separate item and was designed to non standard dimensions in order to frustrate replacement with proprietary aftermarket lip seal. Pumps goes 400 hrs maximum before body wears out, then is throw away item.

Latest nausea is the Yanmar data display unit, 3 years you are on borrowed time and certainly by year 4, first sign is that lighting begins to fade, then the warning lights pack up one by one. Sealed non repairable unit, replacement £750 plus VAT. Swear units talk to each other in twin installations, as soon as you replace one failed unit the other goes down, ching £1,800 can be blown over a month.

Yanamar do operate pricing differential between U.S.and Europe, actual pricing at dealer level is 20/25% but dealers in America more prepared to dig into their margin where here it is a closed shop.
