Yanmar hand start

I need a back up starter for my ancient Yanmar 1GM, and wondered why a starting handle from Yanmar costs the best part of £100

It sticks in my craw (whatever that is) to pay that for a bit of bent piping - is there more to it than that? Is there anything I can adapt or bodge?

Yours in the spirit of Scrooge

Cheaper and more effective is the bolt on pulley invented by one of the French's. Ring French Marine in Brightlinsea and ask them about it.

I take it that's not the French singlehander's method, to take a line from the main boom and use it to spin the engine like an outboard? I actually saw a video clip of him doing it - very cool but a little over-elaborate for my simple needs!

Strangely, it was French Marine who quoted me the last price - and when I queried it said it wasn't their fault, guv "we don't make the prices . . ."

I'll ring them tomorrow

Thx muchly

An easy solution

Well, not necessarily easy but certainly cheaper.
Buy a socket (maybe long reach) that will just fit over the spindle.
Cut two wedge shaped slopes in it so it will be thrown out when the engine fires. Use a socket speed brace to crank it.

What makes you think you will get a starting handle with your new engine? I didn't get one with my new 2GM20F!

I did get a starting handle with my Yanmar2GM20 but that was in '88.
However neither myself or my fitter crew have ever managed to
start the engine with it!!!!!!!!! When you close the decompression
levers you'll break your wrist!!
I have heard that fisherman fit an extra pulley which they wrap a
rope round, then if you pull up with both hands------ anyone done it???

If you think the price of the handle is bad, wait till the lugs on the start shaft break, (YES THEY DO!!) Then lie down befoe asking for a price for a new shaft. You see it is actually the cam shaft, so they go completely wild with the pricing, about £400 when I asked a few years ago.

Ooops seems I was jumping the gun. Need to rephrase my offer then:
If I get a new handle I would........
Thanks for bringing me down to reality :))

Ooops - looks like Yoda knoes more about it than me! Why does the freshwater cooled engine not come with a starting handle? I know that I would never be able to turn it over by myself anyway so the option is a bit academic.

I have frequently hand started a 27 hp yanmar (not sure if it is a 2gm or 3 gm i'm sure I will be enlightened). Its not too hard if weather/engine is warm but tough enough when very cold. you need too bodies for it really.one to wind like mad and the other to release the decompression levers one by one!!(makes life very easy) . Frequently we have worked the starter as well to take some of the strain.
often with little battery power just decompressing to get up to speeed and the dropping the levers in one by one will work.

a good tip is to keep a spare car battery (small one will do) as a backup starter using this method

Raw water cooled come with a starting handle - fresh water GM20 and 30 don't ....

...... because the freshwater pump means you can't get at the socket - and I got one with with my 2GM20, would offer the old one from the YSB but it won't fit
