The Yanmar 3GM30 manual is not very clear on how to measure the gear lube level. It it measured with the dipstick srewed in or just holding it down?

That's has always puzzled me, I've assumed it reads correct when screwed down. But I don't bother to screw it down, I just add the thread width to the oil line reading on the stick.

I have just checked the Yanmar manual I keep at home that covers QM, GH/HM, 4J and 4JH2 engines and transmissions. Gearbox oil level is checked with the dipstick just resting on the threads, ie NOT screwed down.

Robin is right. The shop manual fo the earlier 3GM says it must be measured with the plug resting on the thread.

Happy sailing, Steffen

Is the book you refer to the one that covers Yanmar engines 1975 to 85 or some similar dates by SEPCO or a similar name? If so what do you think of it?

I have a 1979 2QM20 with a poorly translated and poorly illustrated service manual and I was thinking of getting something better.

In the mean time can you confirm what the TDC and 20 Deg BTDC marks should be on the QM20 for me. My pulley is rather rusty and while I think I can see a dimple for the TDC I cannot make out the injection timing mark.

Thank you for clearing up the gearbox dip stick level I have always wondered what the correct level was.

Book is SELOC 1975-1998 Repair Manual

It looks useful, I bought it a boatshow just in case but so far haven't needed it in anger.

There is a diagram showing only an injection timing mark (no TDC mark) as a horizontal mark on the back edge of the crankshaft pulley, behind the vee belt groove. This does not look like a normal maintenance job though, adjustments carried out by shims in various places, sounds pretty major to me and time to talk to the man who knows!

Good luck.

Thank you for the info on the book I might have a look at one but it may just be a collection of the service manuals. Having said that my manual has 223 pages so even when reduced by modern publishing it would still be a large number of pages per engine.

I am surprised there is no mention of a TDC mark as it is used for valve clearance checks. I take your point on the injection timing I am only looking at valve clearances but thought one might lead to the other. I need to get down there and do some cleaning up of the pulley boss.

Thanks again
John

Oops sorry! I've just looked again under valve clearance section and the injection timing section. On the QM there ARE 2 marks on the pulley, the TDC mark is the 1st one then the 2nd one 20degs maybe in a clockwise direction as viewed from the front is the timing mark. From the diagram the TDC mark may be slightly smaller(?).

This book is American, doesn't show page numbers only section then item refs. Gives a website as www.chiltonsonline.com
