Snapdragon 747 with Yanmar single cylinder diesel with straight through exhaust - no muffler or waterlock, very noisy but works.

Thanks for advice in thread posted 14 Sep 2005. Now getting round to trying to quieten the exhaust. Can you advise which is most effective at quietening the exhaust noise - muffler or waterlock, neither or both?

Flat water sailing mostly on Windermere, so no need for wave protection, just somewhat less antisocial emissions.

I would suggest a water lock and goose neck as minimum requirements to safeguard against engine flooding .
If for any reason your boat is held down on a tangled mooring maybe, or with a flooded cockpit (blocked drains) ect the last thing you want is water entering the exhaust and filling the cylinder through the exhaust valve.

Hello--I run a Yanmar GM 1 in a Mirage
25'--have a SS round pot type wet exhaust-with rubber hose to the blunt end of the boat--just above the water line--nice and quiet--no problems yogi
