I think I've been lucky! I removed the exhaust pipe from my 2GMF to make access to the gearbox easier and when I lifted it out to drain the water residue the inner pipe from the exhaust bend clattered into the bucket. I've no idea how long it had been detached and I consider myself fortunate that the engine never inhaled from the exhaust.

I think I've solved a mystery as well - the weld round the water inlet to the bend was incomplete and probably the source of the annoying salt water leak (I hope). Over the last 2 seasons I've replaced the stern gland with a Volvo dripless, reseated the anode bolts, reseated the cockpit drain cocks, resealed exhaust and bilge-pump outlets ....

Now all I need to do is spend £143(!) on a new one or wait for Ebay - the 3GM one listed just now won't fit.

Awol - how old was your engine exhaust pipe? -you've got me worried!

Engine is 25 years young with about 3000 hours - I suspect the offending article is not the original, so your guess is as good as mine.

You're doing well at 25years!!
Are the engine feet original? I had to replace mine due to rust at 18yrs!
Plus several other ancilliaries while the engine was lifted out for the feet.
I'm already planning it's replacement with a 3YM20 although they do not seem to be without problems, but hopefully slightly more powerful. The 2GM20 is a good reliable engine but it does not deliver 20HP!! More like 14HP below 3000 revs. Only just enough to run Kiwi prop if you increase the tickover speed.

Guys. Check them often. My old 3GM30 never had that problem but on the new one the elbow failed after 2 years, together with the lift pump (but that is another story).

You're in luck! There's a 3GM exhaust mixer on Ebay for £9.99 at the moment.
