I purchased a genuine replacement Yanmar Oil Filter for my 1GM10at £8.30 from a dealer.
Does any reader know of a suitable Fram filter that I could use instead? I understand that these can be had from motor factors at less than half the Yanmar price.

Isn't it time someone said 'but if you don't use genuine parts you can't guarantee it's filtering'??

By the way, has anyone ever found an alternative for their engine fuel filter on a 1GM10?

OK!

So lets walk through the logic here....

You've got this £4000 engine which you want to last for ever. So you save £3.75 a year on a cheap oil filter!!!!!!!!!

There did use to be an American website where a guy had bought loads of alternatives and took them apart with some quite surprising results.

You're right, but only partially so.

Of course you need to protect the major investment and the price of small bits is probably not the overriding factor.

BUT -generally, the Yanmar bits are excessively costly with UK prices typically double those of the USA, for example. For the same part number etc. Which means that you are being fleeced to some extent.

So the only recourse you have to put pressure on Yanmar/Barrus (UK Importer) is to look for quality parts that are correctly priced.

Your investment is protected and you have paid a sensible price.

I just took the old one along to the motor factors and said: one of these please, mainly for the convenience. Why faf around phoning and ordering and paying £6.50 postage when I can grab one while I'm out and about in town?

Ah tillers, that's how they get you. They should double the price again to satisfy really conservative yachtsmen... hang on a minute... that's what chandleries do.
