Yanmar Engine Mount Replacement with R&D Marine Mounts

Has anyone done this? £80 a set instead of £80 each makes it attractive but the pitch of the holes is different and they are lower.
The height difffernce could be an advantage as my Yanmar was as low as it would go, but the pitch difference is a real pain.
I didn't want to start messing about with the engine bearers. I have thought of using 50mm x 25mm steel box (as I have some in stock) but can't see exactly how it would work, any ideas?

I have them on my 1GM - had to use them when I replaced my Petter Mini 6 as I needed lover profile than the Yanmar ones. They work ok - the vibration reduction is not as good as the Yanmar ones but this is only really noticeable at idle. Other than that ok and a lot cheaper. R&D seem helpful too when I have had to deal with them.

I have 2 Yanmar engines that have R & D mounts in my club boats.
1 engine is 3GM30 and the other is a new 3YM30.


As with most things like this the explanation is far more complicated than the actual job - but I'll have a go!!!

What I did was to get a couple of pieces of strap steel 2" x 1/2" x the length of the engine bearers, marked out and drilled and tapped holes to suit the pitch on the new mounts. I then inserted studs and welded the back and flushed it off. I then drilled 3 x 12mm clearance holes so that I could re-bolt the steel to the engine bearers using coach bolts.

I then bolted the R & D mounts to the new plate - then bolted the whole lot to the engine mounting feet - dropped the engine into the boat and "roughly lined it up" - I then marked out where the coach bolts would go - pulled the engine out of the way and drilled pilot holes for the coach bolts - swapped the new plate with the mounts still attached and screwed in the coach bolts, after that it was a relatively simple job to drop the engine back onto the new mounts and line it up properly.

Finally, I mixed up some resin and "painted" the steel plate for protection finishing off with a bit of grey bilge paint.

FWIW our club boats would get through a set of Yanmar mounts about every 18 months and with the soft mounts that Yanmar supply - engine fly's about all over the place, breaking flexible couplings every 6 months. With the R & D mounts I get about 4years from a set of mounts and 1 year from a coupling.

The newly installed 3YM runs on the R & D mounts with no real vibration even at tick over!

Before anyone jumps up and down, these are work boats that do a min of 20 hours/week, mostly over short distances i.e full throttle ahead for 5 mins then a burst astern, then tick over, then full throttle again - so the mounts come in for a lot of pushing and pulling.

I would recommend R & D over Yanmar mounts everytime?

Where do you get R&D mounts from here. Is there a direct replacement Yanmar 2GM20 mount(s)

I re-engined my boat with a 2GM20 and used new R&D mounts, as recommended and supplied by the prop supplier, and in my opinion they are far too stiff. There is next to no movement and vibration is felt in the boat at low revs. They may not be the right rating - I would certainly speak to R&D first.

I have been waiting for some genuine Yanmar or Vetus hydraulic ones to come up on Ebay, without success.

I wouldnt bother, i had a set on my 1gm10, they only lasted a season before they were bottoming out at low rpm, this results in steel on alloy banging away. When i spoke to them they said this was normal as they are captive mounts !
I went back to yanmar and they are silent and vibration free,just have to make sure they stay dry and free from diesel !

My Yamar 3GM30 was installed with the Yanmar mounts. Due to a variety of vibration probems I was assisted by the engine installer to overcome them. The first point to emerge was that there are at least two different rubber hardnesses, although I do not have part numbers for either. In some cases an installer will fit harder ones at the back, where the load carried is higher. I changed all mine from the original soft to the harder grade. These helped with the vibration but increased the transmitted noise. They have been in for more than 1000 hours now, so have lasted OK.
