I have been reading the workshop manual and searching on line there are lots of comments on coolant and mention of various brands which don't seem to be available in the UK. Anyone know what the actual specification should be and what the nearest UK commercial equivalent is that can be obtained from a local motor factors or halfords.

For the YM series an OAT-type, also called long-life, coolant is recommended. I use the Halfords undliuted stuff in the bright purple polykeg £25 for 5L.

You could also use the cheaper stuff but it doesn't last as long - perhaps ideally allow 2 to 3 years rather than 5 to 8.

For GM series I believe it's the cheaper stuff in the manual because OAT was not around but can't see why you shouldn't use the long-life.

Thanks for that. Its a YM. I did not think it was important until I read the Yanmar service bulletin.

The important thing is not to mix the two types or you get an adverse reaction between them. There is a third , purple, type which is said to be OK to use to top up either OAT or conventional antifreeze.
