Just fitted a 2gm20 and instead of the alarm for the cooling water i would like to fit a temp gauge. My problem is the sender that is fitted will not operate the temp gauge i assume that the standard yanmar only sends when it is overheating say just below 100 deg cent i would like to be able to keep an beady eye on it most of the time .So would it be ok to replace it with a conpatible one bought from Halfords etc ? I know nothing about Yanmar in specific, but have some knowledge about engines in general.
The idea of a gauge sounds much more attractive then it is. There are two things you pricipally want to monitor
- Is the engine at working temperature
- Is the engine overheating

The problem is that the first can not be seen from the watertemperature. You should monitor the oil temperature.
The second is very important, however if the waterpump breaks down or the inlet gets blocked the temperature will rise very quickly.
Unless you want to gaze at the gauge all the time you will miss it for surely untill it's (almost) too late (I've been there).
It make much more sense to do one of the following:

- Install a gauge in parallel to the light each with their own sensor (you tend to spot a warning light easier) or, even better, put a beeper parallel to the warning light.
Or
- Install a oil temperature gauge and leave the warning light (or enhance it with a beeper).

Just my 2 cents...

if you contact someone like lsuk they can provide dual output senders or adaptors to have both installed at the same time.
I have both installed and they work really well.

i think the sender fitted as standard is simply an on/off switch so wouldn't feed a gauge. you'd need to replace it with a car type sender then incorporate circuitry for the alarm.

It is an excellent idea to fit a gauge but as additional equipment not "instead of".
The warning light and alarm on your panel are actuated by a "normally open" sensor switch connected to earth (or negative) usually through the engine block. When the sensor sees a temperature above normal it closes the circuit to earth and gives you the alarm. The gauge on the other hand is a variable resistance that works in an analogue fashion and tells you what temperature you have. You can normally find a spare "port" on the engine around the thermostat housing somewhere without disturbing the alarm sensor and yes a Halfords one will do OK as most of the threads on the sensors are an automotive standard.
