I have seen a boat I like, 2004, that is fitted with a pair of Yanmars. They have done 150 hours, and the boat design is semi displacement for 22knots. I wondered if anyone has experience of these engines and what they thought of them. Are the reliable, expensive to service?

I have one in our boat.

Just 2 years old with top side of 200 hours on, it has been reliable with no issues.

Servicing was not expensive but now out of warranty I intend to service it myself.

Parts are reasonable and readily available.

Shout up if I can be of further help on anything specific.

There will be those who rave about them and then theres me who wouldn't touch another boat fitted with this engine.
We have one fitted to our Montery 250 and at 11 months the power steering cooler brazing failed. The engine sump filled with water via the dip stick. Result, one knacked engine. The dealer (Southwater) fought tooth and nail and managed to get a new engine fitted under warranty. With 80 hours on the engine, the new power steering cooler brazing again failed. Fortunately this was spoted by Tonto Marine at Dartmouth, HOWEVER Barrus refused to make any offer towards replacent. OK the engine is now 3 years old but only had 80 hours on it!! Now, with 100 hours on her and whilst pottering along at 20 knots, the engine suddenly stopped and wouldn't turn over. There was evidence of oil loss in the bilge and this had appparently come from the breather. The engine eventually restarted and we limped to Brixham at 6 knots with reducing oil pressure. Darthaven Marine came out and found a 100 psi drop on number one cylinder. Out came the engine and for no obvious reason number one piston had melted down. £6000+ repair bill. Southwater told me that major engine components were guaranteed for 5 years. Barrus advised them that pistons are not a major engine component, but try starting an engine without thgem!! Again Barrus showed no interest in making any offer. The engine has been Yanmar dealer serviced every year and no expense has been spared. I have put in an insurance claim for the cost of repair, because there is no apparent reason for this failure. Insurance? Now there's another tale. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Can't comment on the engine, but I have also found Barrus 100% uninterested in helping out end users like ourselves. With £6000 at stake I think I would be talking to my lawyer.

It does sound like the UK impoters are less than helpful, and not customer focussed. That, I would suggest, is a good reason to keep clear. No matter how good the engine, it's only as good as the backup. How can they claim a piston is not a major component. I suppose, by that definition, a crankshaft isn't, or a block, or a cylinder head.

I've always found Volvo most helpful. I know that goes against the tide, but have to sperak as find. I recently heard a case where Volvo replaced two sets of duo props, f.o.c., even though out of warranty, because they were a bit corroded. That's good.

Also sounds like Southwater are a good outfit to deal with.

I have a pair of these. The only problem I have had is getting rid of airlocks in the coolant system after the coolant has been changed. On the other hand, I have had so many problems with Volvo in the past that there is no way that I would ever have Volvo engines again.

No marine engines are totally bulletproof, but some are more fragile than others.

Maybe I have been reasonably lucky, but I've only had a few minor problems with three KAD32's.

I've never had any problems with my KAD's (I'm on my 2nd) - The only gripe I had was that the belt's didnlt last too long (Circulation / Supercharger) eventhough I was alwys checknig tension to make sure they werent too loose or too tight.

I promise this is the only off topic Q i'll ask /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
What problems did you have with your KAD's S28? Feel free to PM if you like

- "full throttle" microswitch u/s
- heat exchanger end plate went porous (hole fizzed thru)
- oil leak from base of dipstick tube
- hour meters stopped working on tachos
- 55A fuse for outdrive tilt/trim blown
- superchager air hose jubilee clip came undone - very interesting noise /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
- half a bolt sometimes turns up in the bilge - turbo or exhaust bracket mounting

etc.

Hi,
any information on the power steering oil cooler for the Yanmar 4lha-stzp, one of the small connections to the power steering oil tank has broken of and a new costs over £400.

Hi,
the same thing has just happened to my power steering cooler, same engine and I have been quoted over £400 for a replacement, any advice please?
