Hi, I have a Yanmar 4JH4E engine fitted to my Southerly. The air intake is a simple molded plastic box, it doesn't have any form of filter element. Whilst this is nice and simple I'm worried about debris getting into the engine, we sail with a large dog on board and I regularly find that dog hairs and other bits of "dog mange" in the engine compartment.

I also suspect that the lack of an air filter means that we are getting a lot more noise from the engine than we should. So I'm looking for a replacement air intake which incorporates an air filter and provides some degree of silencing of the engine induction noise.

I've tried N&K Filters and whilst I'm sure they probably make something that will do, I've been unable to identify a suitable replacement system. I've also tried ASAP Supplies, but they are unable to make a recommendation and although there website list pancake air filter which might do, it doesn't have any technical detail on air flows.

Has anyone out there fitted a decent filter/silencer to a Yanmar 4JH4E? Or know anyone who is knowledgeable about Yanmars and could point me in the right direction?

No definitive answer, but my 3JH3E only has a round plastic box, without filter or mesh and does not appear to suffer. Noise is quite acceptable too.

Hi, can any of you knowledgeable gents out there give me guidance on the airfilter on a yanmar 4JH4E. I want to service the air filter but all I ...

Thanks for the link, I had read this post, but it just confirms what I already know, the "air filter" is just an empty box.

I spent some time on the internet looking at possible options and came up with a K&N filter which is designed for the car after market.

It's expensive, especially when you realise that the price is plus VAT, although I have seen it cheaper elsewhere on the internet. it seems it'll fit 60m, 70mm and 80mm air inlets, so next time I'm on the boat I'll need to measure the air inlet on the 4JH4E and see if it will fit.

I have to correct myself: there is a metal mesh inside the round plastic box, but with holes of 5 mm I do not see what it will capture.
