I don't wish to start another thread about types of oil but would like to know what OP's are using today - so I can go out and buy some for the imminent oil change. The engine dates from 1999/2000.

Just follow Yanmar's recommendation - 10W30 or 15W40, grade CD/CF/CF4/CI4. Easy to find on Halfords shelves.

Thanks I knew rye recomendation as to the grade but was looking for what others use. Much confusion over whether semi synthetic mineral is ok as it appears to be the norm now.

I've used Halfords semi-synthetic oil for years in boat engines, seems fine.

Me too. I've always used Halfords 15W-40 semi-synthetic in my Yanmars and the oil level doesn't go down and the oil doesn't go black.
However, last month I used up all my stock and as 15W-40 fully synthetic is now available at a reasonable price, I'll be switching to that in a few years time.

I don't have the manual to hand (so I may be completely wrong, not for the first time ) but from memory my 2013 Yanmar 3JH5E uses CI-4 mineral oil. In 2014 I bought 25 litres of Millers 15W-40 from a Motor Factor as it was considerably cheaper than buying 5 litres for the following 5 years. I'll need to buy again next year.

CI-4 looks excellent for us. A modern oil with a good additive package that recognises that fuel now has a very low sulfur content. Thus the TBN is quite low, well under 10 in most cases.
