This is my Yanmar starter. When I took it apart there was a a lot of what looked like very fine wire wool, tiny shards of glass/plastic and a short length of copper about 10mm by 2mm. There seems to be damage to the motor (see above), is it repairable? Also, how do you tell if clockwise spin direction?

That armature is not really repairable. Looks like a short length of a copper hairpin has broken away. Could well have damaged the field windings in the process.
Why are you asking about the spin direction? It will be opposite to the crankshaft spin.

The wire wool up by the commutator, is the remains of the brush connection, compare it to the other brushes. The failure of the wire to the winding from the commutator looks non repairable and appears to have hit something, but might be worth talking to an auto electrician.

Try Just Alternators And Starter Motors (JASM). They did a good job on my faulty Yanmar alternator for a reasonable price and with quick turnaround. Located a little north of The Hamble river / Hedge End but you can also get a repair by post. Google JASM. Just a happy customer.

I burned my a starter motor on the same engine. Instead of fiddling around with repairs, I bought some kind of Chink knockoff for less than $100. It has been 3 years now and it has a lot of use. Still working like a dream.
