Can anyone help? A friend has bought a Macwester with the above engine fitted. The air filter box has rusted away and I would like to source a new one. Ebay lists replacement cone shaped ones with no apparent housing, can't see how they would fit on. Also any engine diagrams on line? I have looked.

You are right in saying that the correct filter is cone shaped. One part of the housing is permanently attached to the engine, the other outer part is held on with two clips, with the cone filter in between. Without both parts of the housing, I cannot see how you can attach the filter. I may have a diagram in the worshop manual but I can't access it tonight. I'll have a look tomorrow and post it if I can

I would imagine that any yanmar dealer would be able to source a replacement housing but make sure your mate is sitting down when you hear the price if the cost of other yanmar parts are anything to go by.!!

Here's the correct one for the 2/3GM series engines - £125

For somebody more used to dealing with car engine filters, the Yanmar filter is AGRICULTURAL. Indeed, my one did not have any foam inside when I decided to check it out a year or so after getting the boat. It does now...
It could be worth looking at filter housings for the yanmar industrial engines? I doubt there is much difference. The engines don't have MAF sensors or any electronic gubbins at all, so they don't need anything too fancy.

I had the same problem when I obtained a 2gm20 with the air filter missing. If the base plate that bolts to the head is still intact all you need to do is get a round paper element air filter from a motor factors that fits nicely in the base plate. Then you need a thin piece of aluminum or similar and cut it into a round shape. Then offer the whole lot up to the engine and mark roughly a couple of holes on the base plate and the new top plate that you made, and drill them out. Then get two long bolts to pass through the top plate, through the inside of the air filter, and through the base plate and bolt the lot together. You must use nylock nuts on the bolts because you cant tighten the bolts too much as you would crush the air filter. I could get you the air filter number but it would mean unbolting the filter and i am far too comfortable sitting beside my tilley lamp.
