Have been preparing to put my boat to bed for the first time next weekend.
Did some preparation on the engine this weekend - oil change, filter change (surprise - smaller than last one but this is apparently OK) and anti-freeze into the fresh water.

Three questions

1) Gearbox oil - pumped out the main engine oil then tried to pump the gearbox oil but was dry. Then topped up the main oil and there was some oil in the gearbox again. Is this just a single oil sump or am I doing something wrong ?

2) Seawater system - want to run antifreeze into this, but the inlet pipe is extremely well sealed up. Rather than disturb this, can I simply pour the water / antifreeze mix into the seawater strainer, mounted conveniently accessible ?

3) Fresh water heater - is it necessary to drain this. If so is it difficult (not even found it yet!) ?

thanks for your help

1) G'box is separate from engine .. I've never pumped it out as there's a fairly accessible drain plug on gear change side. G'box capacity abt 0.3ltrs if I remember correctly. Very unlikely that crankshaft seal is shot and oil passing from engine to g'box so can't explain what you saw

It's OK to run the anti freeze in throu' the strainer and to mix it use the water from the "hot" tap - it will help drain your hot water tank.

Peter.
