The forum's help please...I have just changed the oil and filter on my engine and had to use a filter ref 119005-35151 rather than the normal 119305-35151, (both genuine Yanmar filters) beacause the 119305-35151 was out of stock.

The 119005-35151 is longer but has same diameter and fits just the same as the usual filter. Am I ok using this filter or should I change it when I can get one with the correct number?

Comments appreciated.

I think these two links are relevant.

http://www.oilfilter-crossreference.com/convert/YANMAR/119305-35151

The Wix Filter site appears to be down so I can't get their filter numbers for Yanmar but when it is up if you can get their equivalent for the 119305-35151 and compare the specifications with the specifications for 119005-35151 ( http://www.wixfilters.com/Lookup/PartDetails.aspx?Part=88350 ) you should be able to see what difference there is between filters.

I am certainly no mechanic but wouldn't it be preferable to stick with a recognized alternative as listed in the top link?

Let's see what the experts say.

I think you may find the bypass valve settings are different ... ..... FWIW.

Thanks for your replies. I've had the correct filter on order from Marine Power and it's arrived now. I'll fit it in place of the incorrect one.

As a matter of interest, I'd be interested to know what the "bypass valve" does in the filter.

Many thanks again

The bypass valve is a safety feature. If the filter gets clogged with dirt, the bypass valve will open under oil pressure to allow oil to flow, rather than starving the engine. With regular maintenance, this scenario is rather unlikely. Either of the filters you mention would work fine.

If the filter clogs or under extreme cold start , the bypass valve will open to allow the oil to bypass the filtration allowing unfiltered oil to get to the engine but at least allowing oil to flow.

if the valve is in the base of the filter, when the valve opens flowing oil may carry all the collected sludge into the engine with the flowing oil ............if the valve is at the threaed end (top) of the filter therer is less chance of sludge carry over.

The pressure at which the valve opens is dependant on what the engine manufacturerer has requested. Of cours eif you stick to the manufacturers recommended oil and filter changes there is only a slim chance that this valve will ever open.

Thank you very much for the explanations. The engine is well maintained so it sounds as though the incorrect filter would be ok. However, I'm a bit of a failed perfectionist so I'll be changing to the correct one anyway.

When had a yanmar 2GM20F, the replacement oil filter in my yanmar service kit was much smaller than the original. I fitted it nonetheless, it had the same screw fixing, and it was fine as far as I know.
