After 6 months of inacivity my 2GM burst into life without problem, however the throttle is really hard to move. I assumed it was a cable problem but on disconnecting at the engine found the cable is fine and its the lever into the engine thats the problem. Any one any ideas how to fix this without taking out a small mortgage?

It is the gubbins inside that has seized up a bit, mine used to do it. I found that if I jiggled it in and out a good bit it worked loose, then ran the engine and kept reving it up and down for 5/10 minutes. Solved the problem. Just check your diesel and make sure there is no sign of jelly-like stuff.

cables...preventive maintenance

you can coat the ends of the morse cables controlling stop, throttle and gearbozx with white lithium 'marine' grease and move the outer sheath of the cable relative to the innner one. do that every haulin and it willcure most problems. and while you are at it tighten the retaining bolts on the stop and throttle and check the tightness of the retaining bolt on the cable connection to the 2gm marine gearbox lever, which bolt used to be manufactured without any safety locking features, so it could back out...leaving you with a nonfunctional gear shift lever...
