Has anyone else had problems with the pinion gears in 2GM20 fuel injection pumps?

In the past eight years, I've had two pinion gears break teeth and jam the rack on the 2GM20 on my genset. Those failures were at approx 1500 hour intervals. I've just heard of a 2QM in a fishing dory with a similar failure.

I'm now 1100 hours from the last failure and wondering if I should change pinions as a preventative measure, even though I have modified my starting, warm-up and load switching procedures.

Anyone else out there with similar experience?

Cheers,

Glenn

I have a Yanmar 2GM20 on my yacht . It has done 1000 hours with no problem and the engine have a brilliant reputation on yachts. Does the generator put sudden loads on the motor? Try posting your problem on the discussion foum at www.yanmarhelp.com. I dont know who runs the forum but it has lots of usefull info on the engines. Good Luck.Paul

This problem is discussed on Yanmarhelp.com and a reason for the problem and a possible solution are detailed. This seems to be a good site for getting Yanmar questions answered.

Hi, Paul..

Belatedly, many thanks for your suggestion re yanmarhelp.com. Dick has already been quite helpful, especially with a "middle of the night" thought he posted this morning. And I found a 2GM propulsion engine in the US which appears to have had the same problem.

An excellent site for Yanmar technical info and I thank you again.

Cheers,

Glenn
