Yanmar 2gm20 camshaft oil seal

Hi, I have a small oil leak from the front camshaft oil seal on my 2GM20 (sea water cooled). Does anyone know if is is possible to change the oil seal from the front of the timing case cover without removing the timing case cover as I am in Croatia and spares for the Yanmar (Like gaskets) are impossible to source locally. I have been given the part number of the seal as 121450-01801. Anyone know if this is correct and what size it is as I am sure Yanmar do not make oil seals so it may be possible to source a seal from a bearing and seal shop if only I could find one. Otherwise I will have to keep adding oil and cleaning up the drips !!

Usually, if you can get at it, it is possible to extract an oil seal by drilling a couple of holes in it, screwing in a couple of self tappers and then pulling it out with pliers. A gentle tap inwards before pulling will release it if it is stuck.

Gently tap the new one in being sure to keep it square.

OTOH topping up and mopping up the drips is less likely to go wrong.

Think you will find the oil seal is inserted from the inside of the timing cover - it is on the 1GM. So the cover has to be removed, not a trivial job. No longer have my manual, went with the engine, so speaking from memory when i did seal replacement.

If it is the camshaft seal my parts manual has it as 128270-01820. According to a poster on sailboat forum it is a "16286" metric seal.. 16mm Id, 28mm od, and 6mm thick, lip type oil seal. Unlike the crankshaft seal which I think you may have to do with the cover off this this should be replaceable without removing the cover-although it is a while since I did one. Should hopefully be pretty obvious when you have the camshaft cover removed.Hope this helps.

The parts diagrams seem to show the seal fitted from the outside

Looks to me like the bearing (14) goes in from inside but the seal (12) from the outside.

The camshaft bearing is not shown in this diagram , it is fitted in board of the gear wheel

By camshaft cover I mean item 15 on the parts diagram. I would agree you can do this job without removing the whole timing cover.

Thank you so much for all your help. I will wait until I am in my home marine before tackling this. In the meantime I'll keep moping up the oil.
