THE WATER PUMP ON MY YANMAR 2GM IS OPERATING CORRECTLY WHILST STATIONARY AT THE BERTH AND ALSO ON LEAVING HARBOUR. HOWEVER, AFTER A PERIOD OF SAILING WITH THE ENGINE OFF IF I THEN START THE ENGINE WATER FAILS TO APPEAR AT THE EXHAUST AND IF LEFT THE ALARM SOUNDS. I CAN SOLVE THE PROBLEM BY REMOVING THE SALT WATER INLET HOSE TO THE PUMP AND RECONNECTING,WHICH IS A BIT WORRYING WHEN I AM ABOUT TO ENTER HARBOUR. THIS PROBLEM HAS ONLY STARTED SINCE I CHANGED THE SEALS ON THE WATER PUMP DUE TO A LEAK. THE PUMP HAS BEEN CHECKED BY TWO MARINE ENGINEERS WHO CAN FIND NO FAULT WITH . CAN ANYONE SUGGEST ANYTHING ELSE PLEASE

It would sound as if air is somehow getting into the system before the water pump. I have a 2GM20 on my Macwester 30. I recently ran engine when out of water and had major difficulty in getting pump to suck water out of trough set at waterline. I eventually found I had not fastened the jubilee clip on the water in to the pump pipe. If you do not get any answer here which solves you problem go to www.yanmarhelp.com Go on the discussion forum and post your problem there. I dont know who runs the site but a chap called Dick seems to reply to every question plus some other people sometime. The site also has useful infomation on concerning all aspects of useing the engines.

the pump isn't priming which means that there is a gap around the impeller which allows air to get through but once water starts to flow it sucks ok. at a guess i would look at the gasket on the cover, it may be too thick causing a gap between the cover and the impeller. i have the raw water cooled version which uses an O ring and with those symptoms i would suspect an incorrectly seated ring.

I have exactly the same problem. From the replys I guess its because the cover plate my be too worn , so Ill try replacing that and see.

\"The problem has only started...\"

You say the problem has only started since you changed the seals on the pump. Are you sure you fitted them correctly? Are they the right way round?

Re: YANMAR 2GM WATER PUMP SOLVED!!

I had exactly the same problem on my 1GM10. The engine overheat would only sound a few minutes after starting the engine following a period of sailing - otherwise, in harbour etc it would run fine. The problem occurs because the sea water inlet opening comes out of the water when the boat heels over. The water drains from the inlet pipe and the water filter. When upright again and the engine is started there is an airlock in the inlet pipe and filter which prevents the pump working properly for the first few minutes and the engine overheats. I have fixed this by simply closing the sea cock before I do any "proper" sailing, and opening it before I start the engine. It was obvious when I worked it out, but 2 marine engineers could not solve this one!!
