My 1gm10 takes a while to get going on start-up and often when putting into reverse there's a bit of a time lapse. It starts 1st time no problem on idle but when I attempt to increase revs it has no reaction for maybe 20-30 secs, either in or out of gear.

Once it gets going there's no problem - revs are ok and performance is fine. (there's quite a bit of black smoke but suspect it's a separate issue - exhaust elbow is fairly recent)

Main problem for me is when I want to slow/stop the boat quickly in reverse when mooring up there can be a bit of a time lapse before it kicks in

just wondered if anyone else has had similar - maybe an issue with throttle linkage?

thanks
Frank

i have had the same problem before, and noted that it does not happen with a fully charged battery. I suspect that if it does not start straight away, the alternator load on a cold engine charging the battery is too much to allow it to rev for a short time. I have a 4hp battery charging set using an aternator which suffers similar problems if you set it to charge strainght after starting

Cable quality has had a huge effect on my Yanmar, albeit a 3gm but it used to take ages to start and was really sluggish to start with. I replaced all the battery cables for separate reasons and was pleased to find that it now it starts on a cold morning first press and responds lovely. Might be worth a look?

thanks - but the batteries are fully charged and always starts 1st time - (maybe my title didn't tell the story!). When I say it takes time to get going I meant it takes time to react when increasing the throttle

then let it warm up a minute, as soon as you put it in gear you introduce a load to the cold engine. If you have a button on your morse to allow you to rev without being in gear you can do that to warm up quicker

Op says it does it in or out of gear. Sounds like fuel starvation perhaps a fuel pump problem. Rigging up a gravity feed temporary tank may rule out the pump.

The fuel starvation bit doesn't tie in with it running happily ones it gets moving. Think you might need to look at the throttle/ govenor part. I had something similar with my diesel car recently. Started fine, just would not respond to the throttle, unless one got it passed the dead period*. Swopped out the injector pump and cured it. (Old typed diesel, so similar mechanically to the Yanmar)

* Engage 1st and it gets to walking pace at idle revs, move to 2nd and go a bit faster, still at idle revs. Drop it back to 1st and it spins fast enought to respond. Needs nifty footwork in trafic...

Obviously not practical on a boat, but does sound like it might be something in the control. By all means try a gravity fuel tank and a fresh filter, but.......
