Been down to the boat today and thought I would turn the engine over.
Turned it over by hand a couple of times.
Then turned the key and pressed the button ......
Made a few noises but did not turn the engine over !
Swapped batteries, still nothing. tried it on both, still no go.
I don't think the batteries are flat ???
It does make noises but does not turn the engine over ???

Any suggestions ????

Paul..

If you make a habit of having a light burning ie oil pressure warning or generator warning or even cabin light you will be familiar with the amount the light dims when you hit the starter button. Major dimming to black means dead battery or terminals while no dimming means the starter is not getting power. A lot of dimming may also mean the engine won't turn so starter is drawing excess current.
As suggested the solenoid (an electrically operated switch and sometimes also pushes the pinion onto the ring gear) makes a loud clack noise. If this is the case then the starter motor has bad brushes/commutator or the contacts of the solenoid are dirty or not making contact. If it is the type which pushes the pinion into the ring gear a worn ring gear or pinion may cause it to not mesh into the gears which would mean the contacts cannot be made. check the voltage at the starter motor battery terminals when the start button is pressed. If there is voltage the problem is in the starter or solenoid and it should be removed for repair by an electrical shop. good luck will

My Yanmar starter does this when it hasn't been used for a week or two. If I stab at the starter button half a dozen times instead of pressing it in it will start. I imagine there's some dirt or condensation somewhere in the starter motor.

The noise was a click and a bit of spinning but not turning over the engine.

Well i took the alternator out to get to the starter motor.

Changed the anode while the alternator was out the way. It was well corroded away and the zinc had come away from the bolt. It took a bit of fishing out .

Took all the contacts off the starter and cleaned and replaced.

Still did the same noise. Hit the starter with a hammer.

Stabbed at the button a few more times, it then started.

Tried a few more times with out a problem ??? (for the moment)

Any more suggestions ???
