having trouble finding the fuel filter! - I know it's a small engine and should be really obvious ... there is a fuel filter next to the tank .. but no obvious other filter. local chandlery have provided a small in-line filter - but can't work out where it goes. boat is a beneteau 260 spirit

Only if you are looking from the front of the engine! If you are looking from the back it is on the right - they are all in the same place!

There are likely to be two. The one on the engine is just below the exhaust pipe and a bit of a so-and-so to change and replace so that it does not weep. There might also be one in the fuel line from the tank but that will have been installed by the builder so type and location may differ from boat to boat.

This is a 2gm but it's the same type fuel filter housing, behind the pipes on the top left.

many thanks for the help - I've also heard that it's a real swine to undo and re-seal. the main fuel filter seems fine - so how much trouble am I going to cause if I choose to leave it for another year?

Last time I changed filter on the old motor, I treated it to a new copper washer cos it was looking a bit ragged ; not that easy finding source of washers right size. Other option is to heat up old washer to a cherry red colour with gas torch etc then plunge into cold water to anneal ( ie soften). This means that it seals better which fixes most probs. Some folks find a weep from a poor seal and overtighten the bolt so stripping threads etc.

Yes, the problem is the locking ring you see in the piccy which is a devil to get a purchase on to both undo and tighten exactly right. TBH I have only changed mine once in nearly 20 years when the engine was out of the boat and in my workshop and I could get at it!. If you get your fuel from a good source, have a plastic tank and don't get a lot of crud in the in line filter, unikely anything is going to get to the one on the engine! (Famous last words!)

The filter in the fuel line is usually coarse, the one on the engine is fine. I change both each year. My engine fuel filter (1GM10) has an "O" ring, which I also change. Clean oil and filters are much cheaper than engine re-builds.

Ah yes that sodding filter housing!!!

Also have a 2GM20C, easy way to undo said filter housing is to offer-up a screw driver (flat) against the 'knobbly' bits around the ring and one gentle tap with a softer hammer and bingo!! It spins undone.

Drop the old filter, new filter in/on - reverse of above.

Really is that simple, but its a proper struggle if you try to get leverage around the ring, there just isn’t the space to get a tool or you hands round it.
