Yanmar 1gm10 (again) Oil level in gearbox?

Hello!
Our workshop manual which came with the boat helpfuly suggests filling the oil in the gearbox of the 1gm10 to "between the two marks on the dipstick". A logical and expected instruction you would think....HOWEVER, the dipstick in the gearbox only appears to have one mark, about 1cm from the bottom of the dipstick. (Standard gearbox, not a saildrive).

1) Can anyone confirm where the oil should be filled to (the max level)?

(We have added the prescribed 0.25ltr which seems to take it to just above the mark - is this correct?)

2) Can anyone suggest a decent operators manual or workshop manual for these engines?

It sounds as though you've filled it correctly, and there is only one mark (unless they regard the end of the dipstick as the lower mark, and the scribed line as the upper mark maybe ???).

You might be lucky and find a Yanmar workshop manual at a boat jumble or you can buy a new one from Yanmar at a price /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
 
The Yanmar manual shows one mark, the end of the dip-stick being the low level "mark".
For checking, the dip-stick should rest on the threads, not screwed home. Might this explain your slightly high reading?
 
I agree with earlybird, but have always thought this a very confusing, if not technically flawed instruction. To look for a trace of oil at the very bottom of a dipstick, whilst resting the threads on the g/box dipstick aperture, leaves plenty of room for mistakes. Even when there is a trace of oil at the bottom of the dipstick, its far from easy to see it.

I can only think that the reason why Yanmar did it this way is that maybe there isn't enough depth in the g/box to have a longer dipstick. Or is it because the dipstick also serves as the "breather" so they don't want it submerging too far into the oil.
 
...The non Yanmar manual I have, also mentions to take the level without screwing it in - but good to know the line is the low level indicator - thanks.

To get an acurate reading I will probably have to wait until the boat is craned in next week - at least I know what I am looking for now.

He didn't say the line is the low level indicator...its the top level indicator...so long as you see oil below the line or on the line your ok!.....least of my worries as the poor thing is totally striped...at least i know the engine inside out!...:)...nice piece of engineering but then i spose they all are.
 
Bottom of the dipstick is the lower level, the mark on the dipstick is the maximum level. Do not confuse this with the hole halfway up the dipstick as this prevents oil syphoning out of breather.
Luckily the GM service manual is the best manual that Yanmar produced, if you email me your address a will send you a copy on CD.
 
The general principle with dipsticks and fillers is that if they screw in, the test position is resting on the threads, but if they press in, you press it in.

A way of checking how close to the bottom you are getting is to try screwing it in.
