And, furthermore, it will run for several months with emulsified oil in the gearbox!

This is NOT to be recommended, of course, but two years ago I swamped my launch, complete with 1GM10 - fished the boat out, changed the engine oil, ran it, changed the oil a couple more times and renewed the wiring loom.

I FORGOT to change the gearbox oil...until I looked at the dipstick, several months later!

it's a very strange thing but the 1gm uses different gearbox oil to the 2/3gm even when using the same model of gearbox. may be due to the lower power throughput.

I hesitate to contradict Steve, but Yanmar recommend SAE30 monograde oil for the 1GM10 gearbox see: http://www.yanmar.co.jp/english/products/marine/engines/ment/gm.htm

I too have a 1GM (not 10) and on finding this info I assumed that the same would be true for this older model. Monograde oils are not easy to find, but I discovered that Halfords sell 1 litre bottles (dark green) of lawnmower engine oil which is SAE30 so I used this. No problems so far and one bottle is enough for 4 changes! I am not sure of the benefit of using monograde, or the problems which might arise if 15/40 were used, but if Yanmar say so ...

I had a problem with the cone clutch in my Yanmar gearbox, and the dealer (who is very experienced) recommended that I use straight SAE 10. Problem is that the clutch is lubricated by the same oil as the gears. The gears can only benefit from the slippiest best oil you can get which is exactly what the clutch doesnt need. And once the clutch starts to slip you have expensive problems.

Certainly, dont use the lates super dooper engine oil in the box. As someone has said, Yanmar recommend SAE30 straight oil. I have used the SAE 10 for 2 years without probs but you do so at your own risk.

Umm...ok looking more complex now!

The info you point to does refer to the 1GM10 however and not the 1GM........maybe different.....

I am going to go check the gearbox model number and compare that to the list on Yanmar Help.

I'll update when I have.....
