The starter on my OMC 5 litre V8 is U/S due to salt water ingress!(caused by combination of slight sterndrive transom plate leak and Knackered bilge pump float switch). Does anybody know whether the original starter (its a Motorcraft, engine is Ford 302cu in based) is a marine unit or will a car starter do for a while. Also can anybody recommend a reliable supplier? I must admit my previous boat had a marinised Rover V8 and both starter and alternator were standard automotive items

Basically no, BUT it depends how it is/was spark protected. On most og them its the solinoid thats protected, on others its the motor as well. For eg. on most of the volvo's the motor is the same as the road going version, even has the same Bosch number on it. But the soli is protected and sealed from the outside with heat shrink. I kid you not!

What I would do if its beyond repair is give Sierra Parts a call. They are to OMC what Keyparts are to Volvo. I would take it to a repair place to see if they can rewind it and give it a once over. One thing that I have done before is bung one in the oven on a very low heat for a couple of hours. Dries out the windings and "should" get it turning again if its not too bad. Not a long term solution though.

Had an ignition coil go t*ts up on me at easter on my 4.3ltr mercruiser, sourced a coil at a vehicle dismantlers, (recommended by a mercruiser dealer btw!) off a Ford Sierra! ..Don't see why a starter motor, as long as it's compatible with your engine cannot be sourced from a car/truck version, only difference that I can see is if it comes in an OMC box....it's gonna be three times the price!,. fit a cheap car alternative from Halfords , and get your original repaired at an auto electricians.

Get one for a car from real steel 01895 440505.
The Ford starters are a bit funny and haven't got a solonoid on them . The only spark protection is that OMC take the covers off them, and refix them with silicon sealant around the joins

No No No No, all electrical items in the engine bay are spark protected on petrol engines. You must replace with the correct starter, alternator, bilge pump, and any other part that has brushes or causes or can cause a spark including distributor. Stuff like coils are OK as they cannot cause a spark (paradoxically).
An alternative is to see if a reconditioner can rebuild but make sure they replace any flame arrestor screens fitted as original.

Up to him of course, but I have stripped out these OMC / Ford starters, and the only spark protection they have is that the covers are sealed on with silicon for marine use.
