Hi all, could anyone tell me why there are no american style poker run boats in the med, and if there are could you let me know of any manufacteres, cheers Ian
Do you mean those big Scarab things with tripple 8.1 big blocks seriously tuned which amateurs race to Mexico for weekend fun? With European fuel prices take a guess. But I know what you mean these are serious boats for serious fun our American friends don't consider a boat 'performance' unless it can do 70 mph out the box. I saw some in St Petersburg, Florida with their engine bays open 1000+hp a piece. Awesome. Didn't realise superchargers were so small though.
but there ARE some yank muscleboat in the med. Leading makes seem to be scarab and fountain. We helped out a monster grunt grunt grunt fountain from Port |Grimaud, near St trop and seems he had a good afternoon - i promised i wd be around to help him back in at 6pm and tsk only two fenders says Mrs tcm. BUT then he turned up with 2 botles of wine for our efforts, so we are all in favour of these loonies. Get something, anything up to 35 feet for summer lunacy on a trailer, and park it up in the garden from spetember to may.
<font color=blue>I guess you mean those Cigarette boats that use petrol at a rate of about 3 gallons every minute at speed. Probably don't see as many as in Florida as there's not as much drug runnning going on. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif
There is a Cigarette dealer somewhere in France, I think. But far better off buying a Sunseeker XS2000 — similar thing, Buzzi hull, capable of mental 70mph+ speeds, relatively cheap compared to an imported Yank muscle-boat, but running a pair of 420hp Yanmar diesels rather than big-block V8 petrols. Also has two-speed ZF box and TriMax surface drives. You can get a decent 2002 one in the Med for around £150k. Having tested various 40ft+ Cigarettes, Donzis and Fountains, I'd thoroughly recommend the XS2000. Or the Fountain 42 Lightning if you can find one (and afford the petrol).
Heck I don't know, i've a 27 ft cruiser with a 7.4L that goes fast enough for me thanks, as for size depends on power and weight I guess. There's those racing cats with 225 merc outboards don't know their speed. The poker run boats I saw were around 40ft I think, there are a few rules and I think one of them is that the boat has to be production i.e Scarabs, Cigarette etc that joe public can buy and use, bit like rallying cars I guess.
They are usually 35ft+. Fountain holds most world speed records in their class.
I'm just about to drive to Miami to the boat show - I'm sure there will be lot's of muscle there!
I saw this tasy looking 38/40 ft monohull which was running more like a race boat, but in its case used for fun... This beasty had 4x supercharged V12 Lambos and surface drives, I was told each unit was on for about 1100hp!!!!!!!!!!!!
Needless to say that it was not here Blair's petrol tax mad empire.
Col - still not as fast as some of the Fountains w/Mercs.
Just been to Miami B Show - experienced the ROAR of those muscle boats again, but couldn't wangle a ride in one.
Saw a Leopard, but had to make an appointment to board, so told them I wouldn't buy one, so there
Hi Arthur, did you read the blurb? 110 mph. How fast do you want to go?
Marine turbines did do a Lightening with 2X Rolls Royce gnomes, good for 95mph, but can't find any info now.
Beauty is, they run on diesel (or jet A /forums/images/icons/smile.gif)
Or try here, faster still. Cols Picture Album
Col - I read some of the blurb, but Fountains do 125+mph w/Mercs. Me, personally, I don't want to go that that fast, but I'd like to experience the thrill at least once.
