if it has a gearbox cable that travels down the leg and can be accessed on the forward side of the leg. The dog clutch is probably slipping due to incorrectly adjusted gearbox cable following a water pump impellor change. easiest way to check is to disconnect the solid cable at the join (normally just above the cavitation plate) move the lower part of teh cable so that it engages forward, then reverse, making sure that in each position it has moved as far as possible, and that the gear has engaged. then leave the lower part in about the halfway point. Then do the same for the gearlever itself. If you have been spinning the dogclutch due to misalignment of this cable, it will be fairly obvious tha the midpoint of one is not the midpoint of the other, and you will then need to move the adjusting nut at the joining position, so that the two align.
If it is not this, then it sounds like a dogclutch problem, and you will need to strip the bottom part of the leg.
ok i have not gone out to look at it yet and there is only forward gear that is done by a leaver on the side which seems to have a solid bar going down the leg and the outboard has not done that many hours and has not been taken apart at all exsept i had to tighen up the throtel cable.
Sounds like the rubber bush on the prop has had it. They normally go after the prop has hit something. If the prop is not turning then the linkage may need adjustment but this is not normally required on a low hour engine.
ok it goes into gear ok and pushes me along fine at 1/4 throtle but soon as i open it up it starts to slip untill i throtle down then it grips again and i cant see anything to adjust .
Possibly a broken shear pin. You would get some thrust at low speed but the moment you open it up the prop starts spinning on the shaft and you dont go any where.
Easy to check, take the prop off and there should be a pin a about 3cm long(in the top of the prop), if its missing or broken stick a new one on (Theres usually spares in a rubber mount under the cover.)
well what can i say but thanks you lot it was the pin and all running fine now, and i was starting to sweat at the thorght of rowing again to my deepwater mooring !!!
