Last year I bought a Yamaha F4 in Cowes. I expected the warranty to be honoured by Yamaha Holland, but so far have come up against a refusal, the reason being the low selling price in the UK compared with Holland. Furthermore I can' t seem to contact the UK office - they are closed according to the message on the telephone. I would have thought that a warranty should be honoured no matter where you bought the b... thing in the first place...

By the way, I'll have to send it back for repairs once again with the same complaint - part of the rim/undercarriage bearing the gashandlle has come loose and this vibrates like mad. I can't detect what the problem is or I would have solved it myself.

Anyone share my experience?

Have look www.iboats.com scroll to the Yamaha page and post your problem there
It's an american site and is the best site on the net for outboard problems, I'm sure you'll find the answer there

Have you tried contacting Yamahas head office in your country?

Car dealers try to refuse to do warranty work on personal imports but the manufacturers insist they do or risk losing their franchise.

I have a similar problem with Yamaha in Tunisia. I have a 36 powerboat with yamaha stern drives. During the 320 hours I "enjoyed" my new boat, legs bearings broke. I wrote to Yamaha Japan and they advised to have the drives shipped to the UAE dealer for repair. 25 hours after repair same problem again. Mr Nishizumi and Mr Tatsumi (Yamaha Japan) requested Yamaha Tunisia (INDUSTRIA) to inspect the drives. I received a letter from Yamaha Tunisia saying they consider the so called Yamaha international warranty only for products sold by Yamaha Tunisia and want a substantial payment in advance for inspection. Yamaha Japan said there is nothing they can do about it!!! I have no other choice than legal action.

It's on account of Yamaha Holland's refusal that I'm posting this; by the way, there's no way you can contact them. I've searched the net for an e-mail address or a phone number, but I've come up with zilch so far. You're quite right I should verify what my dealer says, of course he's still p.. off about my buying the thing in the UK in the first place.

Sometimes it depends on whose warranty is in question, if say the manufacturer gives a 1-yr warranty and the importer in the country you purchased it from extends this to 3-yrs BUT in the country you want it serviced they don't extend the manufacturers warranty then you will have no recourse in years 2 and 3 without returning the item to its country of purchase. The extended warranty will be part of the higher cost charged.

So in your example, if the UK product comes with 1yr Int warranty, that should be honoured world-wide according to its terms, any warranty added by the Dutch importer for the same product sold in Holland won't apply to UK-sourced product.

Normally for International warranties manufacturers give the contact details for obtaining warranty service in each country in the owner's manual???

Re: Yamaha warranty

Never mind warranties - check out spare parts prices from Yamaha.

Example is a short block for a 4 horse 4 stroke which comes in at around £1700 supply only. Duh - one can buy a complete outboard for around £700 so how do Yamaha come up with the price for a short block (block, crank, piston and rods)

At that rate I could buy 2½ new outbosards for the price of a short block if I ever was unfortunate enough to wreck a crankshaft / pistons.

Come back Seagull - all is forgiven

Same for a 6 HP is around £1100 for a twin cylinder block TWO pistons and TWO rods.

Seems to me someone somewhere has got their sums wrong or do Yamaha want us to buy new engines instead of repairing the old ones?
