Hello,

Just installed 2 Hydra Drive units into my cruiser (Yamaha) and with the water ears on found that the legs were very noisey all though being out of water, do anybody with this setup find the same?
It seems the gearing is noisey, I have taken the gearbox apart and all seems ok, any feedback if will be welcomed.

This does seem to be a characteristic with these.

I often follow someone with a Hydra Drive, and the whine is very loud. On the up side, you tend not to hear it in the boat, when going along on the water.

They are very smooth on gear engagement. Much better than Mercruiser (not saying much) and better than my Volvo DPH.

I've never really understood why people have an issue with the engaging disengaging mercuiser drives. It's works fine, and rarely fails. It just takes some getting used to.

Many Thank Geoffs,

Your right about the gear select very impressive, as for the noise that is good news I can now enjoy the cruising.
Many Thanks

Agree Brendan. Don't have an issue as such, but can't deny they are clunky. But as you say very reliable.

The only week spot in my experience, is the ignition cut out switch (on Alphas anyway). If anything goes out of adjustment, oe in my case gear selection cable goes stiff, engine tends to stall when gear selected.

The answer is, of course, keep everything well maintained, no bother then. What happens if my EVC goes wrong, gawd only knows. Probably Volvopaul and spannerman as well /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Will be noisey out the water, like running your car with the bonnet up! though these drives are usually quieter than volvo or merc as they have a clutch pack rather than a cone gear.

The only noise you might get is if the engines are not aligned corectly putting strain on the drive hub in the flywheel.

Great leg worked on a few not many probs with them unless the boats planing all the time, then you may get overheat in the top half thats out the water, answer is to fit spay jets.

I have a pair, and they are a bit noisy, I was told this was because they are straight cut gears.?... However I do have 1000 hours on one of the legs... the other had the overheat problem referred to above... I have fitted a spray jet mod and touch wood no problem since.

A great drive, very smooth engagement makes low speed handling a pleasure compared to some other less sophisticated drives :-)
