I have two Yamaha FT9.9 outboards on my catamaran. One of them has repeatedly over the last 18 months needed to have the adjuster extended to enable me to engage reverse. I have now reached the limit of the adjustment and have been searching for the cause. With the remote cables disconnected the out board behaves perfectly engaging both forward and reverse, with the cables attached the gear change lever on the outboard moves noticeably less when selecting reverse. The bracket that the remote cables terminate at on outboard is not bent and attached firmly. I can only assume that the remote control in the cockpit is not giving sufficient throw in reverse. Any advice on what to check in the remote control box would be most appreciated as I've never had one apart before.

Peter.

If it is only one cable that is affected have you looked to see if the ends are properly attached to the outers? Perhaps the inner is moving the correct amount but movement is being lost.

Just a bit of feed back on the above problem for any other 9.9 owners. The problem in selecting reverse was due to worn rubber bushes that hold the lower apron to the powerhead. The additional movement between these parts absorbed some of the throw when selecting reverse. Quite why Yamaha have placed the remote bracket on the apron which moves independently of the powerhead where the gear change lever is positioned I don't know. We have managed a bodge to see me through this season by zip tying the remote bracket to the handle on the powerhead to absorb most of the movement, but replacement of the bushes requires the powerhead to be removed, sounds expensive.

Well, it was lost movement of a sort.
No reason not to do it yourself. Pretty straightforward (apart from, sometimes, getting the drive shaft to release from the socket in the end of the crank).
