I have a 1980s (I guess) Yamaha 9.5 outboard which is beautiful as an engine but swings about the vertical axisand I can't figure how to clamp it. Can anyone with experience of the engine tell me how, please?

I'd post a picture but I can't figure how and I can't find the blinking instructions. Why does the search function just gum up on here sometimes (actually that one's just rhetorical - it's the outboard question I'd like an aswer to)
thanks

well, I don't think Dogwatch has anything to do with the image failing to display. It's what's called 'operator failure'

Look at the top swivel and you should find a bolt that increases or decreases the friction of the swivel. To lock the engine tighten this bolt.

You could also do with adjusting the tilt angle to get the engine trim correct

Thanks Cliff. Can't find one on this engine, though every other outboard I have ever owned has had one, as you suggest. That's why I asked... in case there was some Yamaha special solution. I hadn't finished installing it when I took the photo, hence the funny angle.

God knows what I was doing wrong with the image thingy. It's a bit upsetting to find I can't even follow Dogwatch's instructions!

[/ QUOTE ]Sorry, can't help with the locking problem, although thinking about it again I had a 25hp jobbie that to adjust the friction you tightened or slackened two pinch bolts on the top swvel - the casing was split and so tightening the bolts would pinch the swivel. Worth a look.

As for posting picks, there are 3 options on P'bucket - use the one marked "IMG code" for posting here.

Try investigating that arrowed boss. It may have the broken end of the friction control bolt in it.

But I've just looked at a pic I have of a 25hp Mariner (Yamaha) transom bracket and it doesn't seem to have provision either
