Hi folks

I'm hoping someone can help regarding the power trim tilt on my old Yamaha 8hp 4 stroke outboard.

The power trim works fine in one direction but is faulty in the other direction (it doesn't fully operate). My local dealer says they'd rather not touch it as they've never had much success with that type of repair. Having taken it to a specialist hydraulic engineers they too have refused to delve into the inner workings (they said the ram and seals look ok though). The motor works so presume it is the bit in the middle that's causing problems?

Does anyone have recommendations for someone to have a look and try and fix it. I'm happy at boxing it and sending it off (UK based) as a replacement part from Yamaha is around £1400! Gulp!!

Many thanks

Whilst no expert I had the same problem on my power trim/tilt unit (Tohatsu 20hp) Having had it all apart to undertand how it all worked I eventually found that a wire going to the solenoid had failed inside the outer cover (bad crimping at the solenoid). It sounds most likely to be a wire powering the solenoid or a solenoid itself. It should be easy enough with a multimeter to ascertain if the solenoids are being powered up. Power tilt units are very expensive as you say so worth spending a little time looking into it.

Just an update for anyone interested.

I’ve sent it off to a Yamaha dealer and they have stripped it down. There doesn’t seem to be anything major. The only thing they have found so far was that a filter plate is missing.

They’ve ordered new seals and filter plate. I await a thumbs up from them.

Fingers crossed it will all work again very soon.
