My Yammy outboard has a small lever on it which has the universal sign for a choke underneath it. I am pretty sure it is the choke - but when I pull it out whilst underway, the revs drop and the engine stops.

Anybody else know which way the lever runs?

Out is choke on, in is choke off. It is normal for an engine to run poorly or quit if the choke is applied when it's not required.

Thank you - problem solved.

I just assumed that applying the choke would increase the revs - but from what I understand now, it just increases the fuel flow and 'chokes' the engine.

a manual choke on a car is combined with a small increase in throttle opening, hence the higher revs when the engine starts. on most outboards the choke merely reduces air flow to make the mixture richer and you have to separately open the throttle to increase revs.

with a hot engine the choke reduces the intake air and makes the mixture over-rich so reducing the power.
