Outboard shows no sign of cooling water exiting when run briefly in a tub. I have a new impeller to hand but I could use a glimpse at a manual before I commence operations. Any ideas where I can obtain one? I have been caught before on ebay - spent £3 (!!) on a cd full of scans of the owners leaflets in 10 languages (I now know the Polish for "carry it this way up" and "caution - heavy- do not drop on foot")
The motor has 2 plates-worth of gobbledigook :-

Yamaha 8
2000
5.9 KW
27.30
Model 00
6NO-87

and

8 CMH
6No L 313199
T

which (even with my command of Polish ) I can make little of except that perhaps L is for Longshaft and 6No, featuring twice, matters more than somewhat.

As a starter can anyone advise if this model is likely to have a thermostat, which might explain the cooling water issue (or rather, the cooling water not issuing )?

Yes I think it is likely to have a thermostat ....probably located at the top of the cylinder head behind the cylinder head
cover plate but I think you should get water from the telltale even if the thermostat has failed

Owners manuals can be found on the website for models since 1998 http://www.yamahaoutboards.com/owner-resources/owners-manuals although strictly for models sold in the USA

Sorry not aware of any source of workshop manuals

Parts lists also back to 1984 http://www.yamaha-motor.com/partviewer/default.aspx?ls=outboard

There is an explanation of the gobbledigook at http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Yamaha/Outboard/parts.html

I am assuming that "T" makes it a 1995 model ??????

Many thanks for the links and suggestions all.
Re:-

I can get to
http://www.downloadboatmanuals.com/1998-yamaha-8hp-outboard-manual/

which might be close enough, but the only way onwards is to download a "PDF converter" and toolbar, which I don't think I need.
To Vic - I was thinking that perhaps I hadn't run it long enough for the 'stat to have opened. (sorry to have shocked you so with the likely age of the thing)
I shall follow up other suggestions in the morning (if I can just get hold of a part number for that paper clip !)

I also have an old Yamaha 8CM (M for manual start) Longshaft. The exhaust water telltale occasionally blocks much to my initial alarm but I have found that it is readily cleared using a few strokes of either a tyre footpump or a fender pump on the outlet to blow the blockage back into the engine. Very occasionally, if not used for an extended period, the water inlet grill on the side of the leg needs removing and clearing of slime/weed growth. Never in 15 yrs had any problems with either water pump impeller or thermostat.
